Going past the Trenton Battle Monument in 1946, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey
Let's time-travel back to December 4th, 1946, and drive north on Warren Street at Ringold Street right next to the Trenton Battle Monument, which has been there since 1893, and is still there. The photo is from the Duke Libraries Digital Collection, which specializes in advertising. I just enjoy looking at the photos, because I'm interested in old buildings, old cars, and just generally old stuff.
This image caught my eye while I was browsing the site just because I like to see if I can figure out exactly where the photo was taken. Luckily, the street sign is easily visible, and of course there's that great big tower there on the right. I jumped onto Google Street View, found the location, and then researched the tower. I just get a big kick out of this.
I had some family that lived in Mercer (Hunterdon) County New Jersey back during the Revolutionary War, in what was called Maidenhead (Lawrenceville), but I've never found out anything about them. Whether they were Revolutionaries or Loyalists I have no idea, but I'm hoping that they were on George Washington's side. He won, you know.
Finding this exact location was a fairly easy bit of research (I'm really not that good at that sort of thing) because even I can read a street sign, and matching up the historic tower is pretty easy nowadays because of the internet. As for the date, well, it's right there in the lower left. Let's take a closer look, this is an interesting photo.
OK, ya gotta love the old cars. I'm not enough of a car expert to tell you makes and models, but if you are please let me know and I'll update this post.
Looks like you could get Krueger Beer and Ale, along with Wholesale Provisions, Butter, Cheese, and Eggs at Litowitz Brothers, Inc. Phone 2-1425. I see a sign for liquors there, hardware, and also a jeweler, Sam's. Looks like people are dressing warmly, it's December after all, but I don't see any snow.
Thank you for visiting Trenton, New Jersey with me!
