Going to an Arizona State football game in 1939

Time-travel with me, and let's go watch Arizona State against Calif Poly in 1939. The game will be at 8:30 pm on October 7th at Goodwin Stadium, which is on the campus of Arizona State, in Tempe.

Actually, if you look closer at the billboard, you see it's A.S.T.C Tempe, which stood for "Arizona State Teachers College". Yes, Arizona State began as a school that taught teachers. Originally it was called a Normal School (teaching school "norms"), but that was back in 1885.

If you're an ASU fan, this may all seem strange to you, but it gets even stranger. Since we're time-traveling back to 1939, you won't be shouting "Go Devils!", you'll be shouting "Go Bulldogs!" Yes, that's what the teams were called back then. Of course, it could be worse, before the '20s, the teams were called the Teachers. I really can't imagine shouting "Go Teachers!"

Anyway, here's Goodwin Stadium at about that time, on Apache near College.  You're looking east.

Don't worry, I'm guessing that there's a lot of free parking. By the way those palm trees there (which were recently replaced) are along Normal Avenue.

And for those of you who doubt that ASU could have ever been called a Normal School, here ya go:

And here's the logo for the Arizona State Bulldogs:

Go Bulldogs! Don't give up a point!
