Hearing the voice of my gggggrandfather Samuel Stone

When I was working on my genealogy, which was actually surprisingly easy because the line I traced went back through what are known as "the First Families of America", and I had an old handwritten chart given to me by an uncle, I wasn't satisfied with just listing names.

I wanted to understand these people, to learn about what the world was like for them. Of course, going back to the time of the founding of places like Harford, Connecticut, there was no photography, no recorded sound. I've found a few statues, but that's all. But I'd like to believe that I can hear the sound of my gggg (I really don't know how many g's, I think 13) grandfather Samuel Stone.

He was from Herford, England, and as one of the co-founders of a new city in Connecticut, he suggested that they use the name of his home town. And in my imagination, I can hear how he would have pronounced it: HART-ford.

I'm descended through Rebekah.
