A visit to Manhattan Lunch in 1929, New London, Connecticut

Thanks to the nice people at the Duke University, who posted this photo for their ROAD (Resource of Outdoor Advertising Descriptions) site, and some amazing detective work by my top history adventurer (who prefers to remain anonymous), we'll be going to get something to eat at Manhattan Lunch, which was on the northwest corner of State Street and Water, in New London, Connecticut. You know, near the monument, and across from the train station. Are you hungry? Let's go!

Let's take a closer look. Hang on a second, I want to read the sign for the furnished rooms. Yes, it looks like I should apply while we're having lunch.

I don't know how long I'll be staying in New London, I wonder if I should rent by the day, or by the week? I guess I'll find out how much it costs. Look! They have tables for ladies, must be a respectable place.

How much money do you have? We're time-travelers from the 21st Century, so I'm sure we'll have enough. Twenty bucks? Put that away, and see if you have a nickel, or a quarter. No, not a dime, that one has Franklin Roosevelt on it, they wouldn't accept it, this is only 1929, and he won't be president for another four years, and dimes won't look like that till '46. Here's a bunch of pennies, hopefully they won't look too closely at the date. Hang on, I need to go make a call, I'll be right back.

OK, I'll admit it, I wanted to talk to the girls who were getting in the car. They must have thought that I was some kind of tramp, maybe looking for work, or hooch. Sorry for the delay, let's go get some lunch. What sounds good? I could go for a chop, and some java!

Thank you for visiting New London with me in 1929!
